How Strong is Your Cannabis-Infused Edible?

If you’re looking to maximize the potent medicinal effects of cannabis, there are few ways better than consuming cannabis-infused edibles. Delivering powerful and long-lasting effects, consuming measured doses of cannabis-infused edibles are an increasingly popular option for those wanting to manage their chronic conditions without resorting to vaporizing or smoking the plant.

But with this increased potency comes an increased need for proper care and preparation. Because we metabolize cannabis-infused ingestibles differently than we do inhaled cannabis, calculating your edible dosage is critical. Here’s a quick guide to help you get the most out of your cannabis without going “one bite over the line.”

THC Dosage: The Science

THC is the specific cannabinoid—one of the principal “active ingredients” in cannabis—responsible for the psychoactive “high” we associate with consuming the plant. We feel the effects of THC any time we ingest cannabis, but the effects are especially heightened when we consume THC in edible form. Because it’s absorbed and processed through the liver as opposed to our lungs, it takes longer to hit our bloodstream and the effects tend to come on slower—sometimes up to three hours for full effect—and produce a stronger, longer-lasting effect when compared with cannabis we ingest by inhaling.

Each cannabis-infused edible we sell is prominently and accurately labeled with the dosage of THC in each individual unit, denoted in milligrams (mg). Over the years, cannabis researchers and clinicians have developed fairly accurate and useful guidelines as to what effect each edible dosage of THC will have on our bodies:

  • THC Dosage: 1 – 2.5 mg
Expected Effects: Mild relief of symptoms, including pain, stress, and anxiety; heightened focus and creativity.

Recommended for: First-time patients, or more experienced patients looking to microdose their cannabis.

  • THC Dosage: 2.5 – 15 mg

Expected Effects: Stronger relief of symptoms; euphoria; impaired coordination and perception.

Recommended for: Patients with stubborn symptoms not affected by smaller doses, or who suffer from insomnia.

  • THC Dosage: 30 – 50 mg

Expected Effects: Strong euphoria; significantly impaired coordination and perception.

Recommended for: Patients with a high tolerance for THC, or whose GI systems don’t absorb cannabinoids well.

  • THC Dosage: 50 – 100 mg

Expected Effects: Seriously impaired coordination and perception; higher risk of unpleasant side effects, including nausea and increased heart rate.

Recommended for: Experienced patients with a high-tolerance to THC; patients living with inflammatory disorders, cancer, and other serious conditions.

Edible Dosage: Real-Life Considerations

While these guidelines provide patients with a useful starting guide; they are not exact. Because each person’s individual physiology is unique, every patient responds a bit differently to cannabis edibles. That’s why it’s especially important to follow a piece of tried-and-tested advice: “Start slow, go low.”

In other words, when you’re learning how your body reacts to a cannabis edible, begin by taking a lower dose than you might feel is necessary, and above all: Wait at least ninety minutes to two hours before taking any more.

If the effects of cannabis feels too strong, relax. Though the sensations—often including nausea, paranoia, or a racing heart rate—are unpleasant, they’re rarely dangerous and should pass soon. And if you suffer from pre-existing heart conditions or other serious medical issues, please consult with a cannabis-knowledgeable physician before trying cannabis-infused edibles.

If this is your first experience with edibles, we recommend you take two or three equal low doses separated by 8 – 24 hours between each. It may take you a bit longer to dial in your optimum dosage, but most people feel it’s preferable to the discomfort of cannabis overconsumption.
